Intrusive thoughts you didn’t ask for. Rituals that quiet the fear for a moment — checking, counting, redoing, confessing, avoiding — but always demand more. A panic attack that arrives out of nowhere and leaves you afraid of the next one.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic run in loops: the harder you fight the thought, the louder it gets. Willpower isn’t the way out. The right treatment is.
“Intrusive thoughts are not who you are.”
Adults with OCD usually know their fears don’t make sense — and feel shame about them anyway. Contamination worries, intrusive taboo thoughts, moral or religious scrupulosity, endless checking, or a need for things to feel “just right.” Panic disorder often rides along: fear of the fear itself.
In younger people OCD hides behind repeated reassurance-seeking (“are you sure it’s okay?”), bedtime rituals that keep growing, homework redone until it feels right, or meltdowns when a routine breaks. Kids usually can’t explain why — they just know something bad will happen if they don’t.
